The Erin Brockovich Foundation (The EBF) was founded to expand on the successful efforts of our namesake. Through years of tireless work, Erin has given a voice to the disenfranchised who have languished in the shadows of a system that is often stacked against them. Her efforts have brought her to the forefront as a trusted voice who listens and unites communities and provides hope based on a history of success. Empowering individuals and communities has provided the framework for our innovative approach to change. Our core ethos is educating and empowering individuals to take action on their own behalf because many of the issues that now confront us as a society can not be solved by governments or through the judicial system. Issues that involve environmental disasters, preemption and corporate accountability require a more organic approach to succeed. The EBF stands as resource to take on issues that are neglected because of their sheer magnitude and complexity.
When the environment is harmed it often takes years for the damage to manifest itself. These slow-to-unfold disasters can harm thousands, even millions of people who are unaware of the danger to which they have been exposed. The heart-breaking reality for most environmental disasters is that they are too big to litigate and the offenders are often long gone by the time victims become aware of their plight. They become lost in what appears to be a hopeless situation where no one can help them.
Innovation is a hallmark of modern healthcare and should be encouraged, but it needs to be done responsibly. As new pharmaceuticals and medical devices are developed and tested, the companies that benefit from their development must be held to standards that protect all people. Unfortunately this is not the paradigm we are living in today. Most people would have no idea if you asked them what Preemption is, but this approach to protecting corporations from litigation has led to millions of people having no recourse after suffering great harm.
The EBF is not anti-business. On the contrary, we realize and appreciate the role that vibrant businesses play in our economy and our daily lives. But because corporations exist in such an important position, their need for transparency and stewardship has never been more important. The EBF can play a vital role with business to navigate complex issues that arise.
